About

Jan Terry is a Chicago based photographer specializing in the medical and healthcare field.

For more than 30 years, I have been the senior medical photographer at Lurie Children’s, a world-renowned children’s hospital in Chicago. Photography is my world and life. I have had the unique honor and privilege of being able to tell the hospital’s patient and workforce stories through images, as well as document the hospital’s changes and growth in the complex healthcare environment.

It is a most humbling experience to be able to do what I do, working alongside world-class physicians and having families trust me at their most vulnerable moments.

Over the years, I’ve seen many remarkable moments, from the loss of life to new beginnings and second chances, as well as groundbreaking research and advanced surgeries, life’s joys, and its deepest sorrows.

My work has appeared in national media, textbooks, medical journals, hospital-related publications, annual reports, marketing materials, and more. My images appear in print and online, and occasionally may appear on the glass of a Chicago bus stop!

Beyond my work at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, I find magic in the everyday with my camera, capturing city street scenes or out in nature. I am able to take my medical training and storytelling skills and macro out in the field to do a completely different style of work. Whether I am photographing the inside of a brain or a heart chamber, the technique is the same when I photograph flowers, landscapes, birds, and small scenes.

When not at work, I love creating abstracts and impressionistic types of photographs using methods of ICM and abstract photography, painting with my camera. While photography is my profession, it is also a serious passion outside of work that fills me with immense gratitude and keeps me wanting to make images on a daily basis.
